CD Review: There’s Nothing Desperate About Jerry Castle’s New CD ‘Desperate Parade’

Most people who have been in the music industry for a longtime are typically very skeptical and critical of music and new musicians who hit the scene today because fore the most part a good majority of the new music out there is undeniably manufactured.   The well-polished country pop sound is not popular with most musicians and songwriters in my circles, so it was refreshing on my first run through of Jerry Castles’ CD, to find a genuine musician who has a real singer-songwriter feel to his music.   True American grit infused with country, rock and blues, is how to describe Jerry Castle’s first cut ‘Precious Time’ on his CD Desperate Parade that will be released on June 25.  Each song at least for me, seemed to be written from the heart and based on true- life experiences about living life in America; finding and losing love, but not in the ‘she done me wrong way’; and making mistakes and learning from them.

Dogs Add to Your Life

167257_1734243471992_3182374_n

167257_1734243471992_3182374_nTo me there’s something incredibly satisfying about owning a dog.  I’ve had a dog in my life since I was two years old, and can hardly ever remember a time that I didn’t own a dog.   Dogs exemplify that unconditional love that we may or may not receive from human companions.  And we definitely know that they are glad to see us once we return home, and sometimes in my case, no matter what time it happens to be.  I am constantly amazed at how dogs relate to their owners and how they read their owners.   How some dogs can detect moods that their owners are in and adjust accordingly.

Which leads me to an article, I read in Time online yesterday that suggests that dogs could possible understand what we’re thinking or can see things from the human perspective.  In the article they used the example of dogs and humans being put in a room with a bowl full of snacks, and as long as the knew their owners could see their every move, they obeyed and didn’t steal snacks.  But, the minute the lights were turned off and the humans couldn’t see the dogs in the dark, the dogs sneaked and stole a snack.  As the article suggested, dogs adjusted their perspective to meet their human owners perspective, which led researchers to conclude that dogs may see things from the human’s point of view.

Well, I am not sure how I feel about this study yet, but I do know that my dogs will sneak and do stuff that they know I don’t like when I am not looking.   Sometimes for attention and sometimes just because they know it’s wrong.  The latter makes me believe that they see things from my perspective and want to try my patience when they can.    I am continuously fascinated by studies that conclude things that I am reading in my dogs everyday, that they truly understand what we say and how we feel.  And they adjust their emotions to support their owners.

Food for thought.

Surprise Hit of Christmas Eve

pecanpraline

I do love to cook. Most who know me, probably wouldn’t guess that about me.   I only cook a lot during the holidays so I always look for new recipes to try.  For Christmas Eve this year I decided to try this box cake recipe I found at the end of last season, a gingerbread cake with a praline topping.  I bought the Krusteaz brand of gingerbread cake and cooked it according to the package.  Then made the praline topping.  It was the surprise hit of our Christmas Eve dinner.  I decided to share the recipe with you.

Praline topping:

Blend together 1/4 cup melted butter or margarine, 1/2 cup packed brown sugar and 3/4 cup chopped pecans. Spread over warm gingerbread and return to oven for an additional 10 minutes. Serve warm with whipped topping, if desired.

London Day 1

I am in London for a week or so with the students at Samford’s Daniel House in Kennsington.  I had forgotten how hard it was to take an overnight flight.  It is hard staying up all day and night, but I managed.  I maneuvered the Tube from Heathrow To the Daniel House.   Then to help with the time difference, my colleagues and I went out sightseeing.   Being a Sunday most were put Christmas Shopping.  There is so much to see and do.  I am a bit overwhelmed.   More tomorrow.
